πŸ—ΊοΈ The Realms are back β€” and this time we made a map

A little under a year ago, we introduced something called Realms β€” a new way of thinking about the different terrains that make up this place. Not topics or silos, but living atmospheres, each holding a different rhythm of engagement.

We meant it. We still mean it.

But if you read the update we added to that post in February, you'll know we quietly put the Realms into hibernation. The concept was sound. The implementation, inside the constraints of Circle's standard interface, wasn't. The navigation didn't sing. The vision didn't land. So we took it back to the drawing board.

This is what came out the other side.

🌍 Why the Realms mattered in the first place

The idea behind Realms was always about more than navigation. It was about making legible β€” visually, atmospherically β€” the kind of place Grokkist is. And the kind of people here.

Circle is a wonderful platform. It does many things beautifully. But it is, by its nature, visually quite uniform β€” a little corporate, a little Facebooky. And that has always been a silent tension, because the people here, and the things that happen here, are anything but.

We've long had a different vision. Inspired by the environmental design of open-world RPGs β€” games that create richly curated spaces to explore, where you discover things by wandering, where agency and self-directed curiosity are built into the architecture itself β€” we wanted Grokkist to feel more like that. A world with texture. A place that rewards exploration.

For a long time we also wanted to commission a proper illustrated world map of the Realms. The kind of thing that makes you want to pick it up and spend time with it.

Technology has now caught up with the ambition. Circle's API tools have matured. A new layer called MCP makes it possible for AI agents to talk fluently to platforms like this one. And agentic coding tools β€” in our case, Claude Cowork β€” mean that a one-person or tiny team can now create things that would previously have required a dedicated engineering squad.

So we made the map.

🧭 The interactive map β€” a first look

What you're seeing now is a prototype. The first stage of something that will keep evolving.

It's an illustrated world map of the seven Grokkist Realms β€” each one clickable, each one opening a panel with the community spaces, upcoming events, courses, and press collections that belong there. It works on desktop and mobile. You can zoom in, pan around, and explore. There's even a Labels button if you prefer to just admire the landscape.

We recommend bookmarking it for now β€” once we're confident it's holding up well across devices and browsers, it'll find a permanent home in the main navigation. The direct link is network.grokk.ist/realms-map.

This is the first step toward making Grokkist feel more visually like itself β€” what we think of as the visible signs of an ecosystem becoming more itself.

🌱 The Seven Realms β€” a tour

For newcomers (and as a reminder for everyone else), here's where things live and what each Realm is for.

🌊 The Soma Isles · Embodied Practice

For integrating experience through the body and creative expression. Attention shifts from thinking to sensing, and insight becomes something lived. Home to Comparative Meditation, Meditation for ADHD, and Intro to NeuroGraphica.

πŸ“š The Realms as a way of finding things

Part of what we love about Grokkist at this stage is that it's becoming beautifully sprawling. Like a great secondhand bookshop β€” you can spend an afternoon getting lost in it, finding unexpected things around each corner. We want to preserve that quality of discovery. We don't want to flatten it into a tidy directory.

But we also don't want overwhelm. Or the sense that things are scattered randomly.

The Realms are how we hold that tension. By giving different energies their own terrain β€” their own atmosphere, their own gathering places β€” we make it easier to find what you're in the mood for, without having to filter out everything else. And as we continue building out the Press, Realm tagging will carry across there too, so content finds the readers who are ready for it.

πŸ§ͺ Please try to break it

This is a prototype and we're genuinely in experimental territory.

Some things will be rough. Some things won't quite work on every device or browser. Some of the popover content is still filling in. The map itself will get more detailed, more layered over time.

What we'd love from you right now is your honest reaction. What surprised you? What delighted you? What confused you? What doesn't work? What do you wish it did?

Leave a comment here, or post in The Commons. Everything you notice is useful β€” it's all grist for the mill.

✨ What comes next

There's more. We're not in a rush, but the direction is clear: we want to keep making Grokkist feel more like a world to inhabit and explore, and less like a platform to navigate.

That means more visual richness. More environmental affordances. Deeper Realm tagging across the Network. Eventually β€” things we'll say more about later.

For now: wander a bit. Open the map. See what's in your Realm. Tap around. Get a little lost. That's how it's supposed to feel.
